Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
