Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
