The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
