Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
